The festive season has well and truly kicked in and to be honest I really enjoy the vibe on Park Road at this time of year. Balmy Friday afternoons are none better spent than at the bar of a funky venue that is only a short stroll from the office or the train station.
Onyx isn’t the cheapest place in Milton to share a crisp bottle of wine with your friends or colleagues, but it’s probably the best venue along this strip. They have a serious range of imported beers that are poured in all sorts of oddly shaped glasses and there’s one waitress who must sample the goods regularly, as she has an intimate knowledge of the beers on offer. On Friday evenings they have happy hour where you can get two-for-one cocktails and selected wines by the glass. For the girls, I’d recommend the Flirtini…2 of these was a great start to my Friday night.
The décor at Onyx is modern retro with a very cool marble bar that you can access from pretty much every angle. You can sit at the bar, or out on the alfresco lounge areas and kick back listening to cool tunes. If you and the crew are peckish, there’s a pretty good tapas menu on offer and although it’s a little pricey, it’s presented well and tastes fresh. My group of four shared the marinated chicken drumettes, duck leg crepes, wild mushroom and red onion salad and Indonesian potato croquettes. The average price per dish was $13 and the portions were enough for all of us to sample at least once.

From 4ish onwards there’s always an after-work crowd at Onyx, although it seems to thin out once you get past 7pm. They have an a la carte menu which I’ve sat down to several times and enjoyed, so I often wonder why the punters head home or elsewhere, particularly when there’s no shortage of corporate cards being flashed about. The service at Onyx is good and the staff are always friendly. My only criticism would be the price, especially for wine by the glass. But all in all it’s a cool place to meet and provides the perfect venue for winding down in the afternoon shadows after a hard week at work.
