HOT: Minh’s Asian Restaurant – Shop 5, 336 Ipswich Rd, Annerley.

Tucked away in the back corner of a small business complex on busy Ipswich Rd, no rx Minh’s Asian is clearly one of south side suburbia’s quiet achievers; it’s a no frills, nurse no fuss restaurant with only a small dining area – but what it lacks in size and grandeur it makes up for in its huge menu and great tasting food.

The list of dishes (in no apparent logical order) in Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai cuisines seems a little odd, but caters perfectly for those of us who can never agree on what region of Asia we’d like to sample the goods from. I crave Thai all the time, which drives MM crazy, so it was to his delight that Minh’s does a wide range of Asian style cuisine which means we don’t have to hit two separate venues to satisfy our opposing takeaway cravings.

Your standard curry or stir-fry dish with vegies, meat, noodles or rice will set you back about eleven bucks. If you go for something a little fancy like duck or seafood, prepare to part with $13-$14 (gasp!). The takeaway plastic bowls are perfect to eat from which means no dishes to be done, which in turn means happy husband.

The red curry chicken and red curry duck are two of my favourites and Minh’s packs the takeaway bowls full of ample sized chunks of meat and bright, fresh, crunchy vegies. The curries are flavoursome and fragrant, and up there with some of the best Thai venues in town.  As for MM’s fave, honey lemon chicken, the meat is plump and fresh, not over-fried, with a tangy but sweet sticky lemon coating. MM can put some food away, but he struggles to finish a bowl of the lemon honey chicken in one sitting, so it’s great value for money.

I can’t comment on the dine-in experience as we’ve only ever had takeaway, but from what we know, the service is always friendly and prompt. Best of all the food is cheap and there’s stacks of it.
