HOT: The French Corner – 240 Enogerra Rd, Newmarket

When it comes to interior decorating, ask I haven’t got a creative bone in my body and am useless at visualising how colours palettes of walls, floors, furniture etc can be harmonious.  One thing I know however, is that MM and I are in need of a kick-arse, bold, make-a-statement mirror for the dining room in our newly renovated apartment.

Friends had recommended we visit a shop on the North side of town that would solve our mirror issues, but unfortunately they didn’t know the name of it, they just gave us general directions.  Like the blind leading the blind, somehow we made it to the said ‘mirror shop’, which as it turns out is called The French Corner.

I wasn’t expecting this to be successful; after all we were unsure of what we really wanted in a mirror, and these things never end up being easy (or cheap).  When we walked through the doors of The French Corner….voila!  It took only seconds to find a perfect match for our dining room and then fall in love with pretty much every item in this delightful French inspired shop.

From prints of Paris and the River Seine in the 1920’s, to old clocks, handbags, jewellery, storage holders, bedroom suites and framed photographs of the gorgeous Audrey Hepburn, The French Corner has so many beautiful trinkets, furniture and clothing items which ooze sophistication, class and taste.

A purchase from The French Corner will set you back anywhere from $20 to $2000.  There is no end of stock (kept beautifully clean, dust-free and well maintained) but store owners Gary and Ann have handpicked a selection of suppliers to bring to their clientele individual and original pieces that don’t have the slightest hint of gaudiness, but rather inspiration, beauty and warmth.

Whether you’re looking to trim your home or adorn yourself with jewellery and accessories, The French Corner will bring out the creative decorator within you and with professional, friendly service you’ll no doubt be pleased to support this local business.

  1. Most likely the most rude retail service you will find in Brisbane from the lady co-owner. A real shame as some nice pieces and other staff lovely. Bad reputation deserved.

  2. Thanks for your comments Josh, sorry you didn’t have a pleasant experience – hopefully they were just having a bad day…?

  3. I couldn’t disagree more with Josh. I was there today and had the most pleasant experience. The staff were very helpful and I loved hearing the stories of where different pieces came from.

  4. Sadly, Mary, I have been there on three different occasions, and had bad experiences each time. That’s at least four bad days for that woman!

  5. Yes, sadly she thinks that she is ‘better than you’

  6. I totally agree with Mary Ryan. I have been dealing with the owners of The French Corner over the past two years and always experienced exceptional friendly and helpful service and advice. Maybe the problem lies with Josh, Brenell and Dave.

  10. I had my first visit to The French Corner this weekend. What an amazing and uplifting experience. One could easily imagine that you have dropped into Paris itself-without the ticket!Just an exquisite range of quality furnishing, mirrors, chandeliers, mirrors, prints and much more. I only had to mention my decorating uncertainties to be promptly given sound advice from experienced staff.Just wonderful, and so were the prices!

  11. I have been a customer of The French Corner for a couple of years now and can only speak highly of their gorgeous, quality furnishings and home wares. I have also found their personalised service to be second to none, from their interior decorating advice right through to their care taken with delivery. I recommend them to all my friends with the greatest of confidence!

  12. Worst retail experience ever. Absolutely classless – wouldn’t give them $1 of my money. I was a first time customer and whilst browsing an assistant (may have been the manager – had blond hair) approached another customer who wanted to redeem a gift voucher. She then informed the customer in a dripping acid tone “we will honor it but don’t have to as it is 6 months old” then stated “Myer or David Jones wouldn’t”. Customer was clearly surprised about this policy – the staff member continued to speak in a belittling way to this customer “who expects to redeem a gift voucher 6 months later” (actually I would)the customer was so berated that she stated “Ok I wont even redeem it now” (good way of getting out of honoring gift vouchers I thought). This staff member continued to put the customer down publicly right in front of me. I even had to ask for them to move so I could continue to browse. The staff member gave me a withering look and moved about 5 cm so I had to squeeze through. The result was that the customer who said she had shopped there regularly left distressed. My husband and I walked out and will never return. As a post script – there is NOTHING in that shop you couldn’t buy anywhere else and David Jones or Myer would sack an employee that was so disdainful towards customers!!

  13. Trisha,
I happen to be also in The French Corner when the infamous gift voucher episode played out. I waited for the owner to fix a hanger on a mirror I bought. I would like to say it feels as if I saw a different episode. The “blond lady” was actually very polite when she said she would honour the voucher although it expired six months ago. She didn’t have to you know. Trisha, try and play that trick with an expired gift voucher at any of the BIG chain stores and see if they would still honour it six months late. Clearly someone else – T….. had the bad day – not the friendly and helpful store owners.

  14. The French Corner has an excellent range of french furniture, cutlery and french prints, we love the french style but were at a loss as to how to transform our queenslander into a home with the french country style, the staff helped us tremendously and even visited our home to give advice. Our home looks wonderful, allmost as good as the french country home styles.

  15. Revisited the French Corner to find a French provincial dining table, loved the oak look with matching buffet and chairs, lovely fabric to choose from, each time I visit, just soak up the experience it is the closest I am going to get to France for a while, brought a fab lamp with gold shade, the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about blending French styles, just love it all.
