HOT: Craft Restaurant and Bar – 12 Park Rd, Milton

I’ve only just stopped wiping the tears from my eyes regarding Onyx having to close their doors a few months ago, after struggling to return to good form following the 2011 floods.  So it’s almost with regret that I’m loving the new residents at 12 Park Rd – Craft Restaurant and Bar.

With pretty much the same relaxed feel and breezy outlook that Onyx offered, Craft has opened its doors in recent weeks as an all-rounder, offering lunch and dinner week days, plus breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekends.  I stopped in for lunch recently, after spotting the lunch-time menu which boasted a range of delicious sounding meals for only $15.00

Craft offers a tapas menu to choose from, or a substantial meal selection – all very tempting.

Princess opted for the Penang chicken risotto with Thai inspired vegies.  The flavour was spot-on as far as Penang goes…if anything it was a little too rich, but the lemon grass and lime undertones were lovely, giving the creamy dish a fresh and fragant aroma.  The serving size was generous, and needless to say my sparrow-stomached friend struggled to get through it.

I chose the spicy fried calamari with garden salad and chips.  I never choose the calamari – I am a calamari snob, and am often disappointed with heavy batter and oily rubbery pieces of squid….so I guess I was really putting Craft to the test by ordering this dish.

Like the risotto, the serving size was generous.  The calamari wasn’t exactly lightly battered, but it wasn’t heavy either.  The batter was nicely spiced, in fact the flavour was delicious and moreish, however after a while it all got a little rich and hard to stomach.  The salad was served ‘on-the-side’, and I’m thinking that if they tossed the calamari through the salad, with a nice dressing that helps cut thorugh that oily, rich flavour of the batter, things might have been a little better – but hey, that’s just me.

The service at Craft was faultless, and our waiter was very helpful with wine selection and a confident run down of his recommendations and preferences on the menu – love it!
