HOT: Boulevard St Michel, 187 George St, Brisbane

How much does making and taking your lunch to work every day suck?  I’m not creative when it comes to sandwiches and in the mornings it’s the last thing I can really be bothered to take care of.  Reheated leftovers can make you sleepy and if you leave the office for a lunch time feed, it can often take more than the half hour or so you give yourself as the cafes drag the chain.

Boulevard St Michel caters for eaters on the run and offers tasty, creative light meals at reasonable prices. Tucked in amongst the retailers and bars on George Street, this busy, cramped, bustling café really took me by surprise.  As my client and I sat down I had to shuffle my seat around a bit to ensure I wasn’t encroaching on the party behind me and I hoped I didn’t need a bathroom break during lunch, as getting out from the table may have been complex.  As soon as we sat down though the attentive staff took our drinks orders and returned within a minute to deliver the goods.  We didn’t have much time so I asked my companion who was a regular here, what she’d recommend; otherwise it would’ve taken me all day to decide as the menu was big.  The BSM Club Sandwich it was.

We only managed five minutes of pleasantries before our triple-decker sandwiches arrived with a generous serving of chips.  As I bit into one of the quarters it oozed with gooey melted cheese and a tangy aioli sauce.  For a simple club sandwich it had a whole lot of flavour, and I was won over instantly.  It was hard to talk through the layers of bread and salty chips, but we were both in the same boat and chose scoffing over conversation.  As we finished up I looked around and noticed the place had emptied considerably since we sat, but there was still a steady stream of new patrons searching for a quick feed.  Thirteen bucks later I was tip top, had managed lunch and a meeting in under an hour, and didn’t feel like a nanna-nap later that afternoon.
