HOT: Afterglow Duo

Brisbane’s pub scene is abundant with stock-standard, unhealthy heard-it-before covers bands and more often than not, story they only serve well as a bit of background noise while you sip on your pint of beer.

It’s a huge over generalization I know, and for all the muso’s and wanna-be rock stars out there who sing covers all weekend, I apologise…but I want something more.

I was at the Breaky Creek Pub a few months ago and while scoffing on a T-bone, MM and I were drawn towards the sound of live music coming from another section of the venue. We followed our ears to the alfresco area at Substation no.41 to see Afterglow Duo – two guys belting out some awesome tunes, which were clearly covers, but with an original twist. They had a serious crowd of pint-swillers dancing in front of them and as each song came to a close they received a rousing reception from the dancers, diners and bar flies.

It just so happened that we were on the hunt for a band for our wedding reception so approached them in between sets to see if they were interested. A few minutes and negotiating words later – deal done – and weeks later on our big day, they did not disappoint. They had my wedding guests on their feet all night and were very accommodating to those of us who have a penchant for steeling the limelight, the microphone and the tambourine.

The guys are flexible with their play lists and happy to take requests, which always keeps the crowd happy. Afterglow Duo does sets around Brisbane a couple of times a week and can be seen at venues such as The Newmarket Hotel and Breaky Creek Pu.

Check out their Myspace page for more info as well as gig times and venues.

  1. I had the pleasure of seeing these two young men play when I was home on holidays. It is amazing how two guys can blend together with so much talent doing cover songs but they did a few original songs which shows just how talented they are so it would be wonderful if they were lucky enought to get a record deal. Maybe we should start calling some labels to come see them. Congratulations on your wedding. I was disappointed that you did not mention their names.
